If you are sedated, your heartbeat, breathing, and oxygen levels will all be monitored during the exam for your safety.

You have access to a call button in case you become uneasy during the test. The machine will make some loud and repetitive humming noises as the MRI image is obtained. They will also communicate with you through a speaker in the MRI machine. The technician will then control the bench's movement from another room. Small coil-containing objects which can send and receive radio waves may be placed around or next to the joints being examined. They may also use straps and bolsters to help you stay motionless and maintain the same position during the procedure. You can also ask for a pillow for support or blanket if you have trouble lying on the bench or are in discomfort. They will have you lie on the bench on your back on the movable examination table. The MRI technician will direct you into the position for the scan. They may also inject you with a saline solution used to prevent blockages in the IV until the contrast dye is injected. The contrast dye will enhance image quality and allow the radiologist to confidently and accurately diagnose. The MRI technician will inject you in the arm intravenously with a gadolinium-based dye.
